FAQs regarding New Club Sailboat
The Mission:
To offer BBYC’s non-sailing members, and the parents of sailing children, the opportunity to learn to sail in an easy to use, family friendly, sailboat. The underlying objective is to grow and inspire the sport of sailing for a lifetime at BBYC
How can we achieve this?
Assuming that there is interest by club members, BBYC with BBSF collaboration are considering the purchase of 2 ease of sailing, family friendly boats. Included in this program will be sailing lessons to help members to learn to sail. The cost of each boat is $11,000. Members who are interested in participating in this program will be asked to pay $400 - $500 per year. For this fee, you will get use of the boat plus 3 sailing lessons with our BBYC Sailing instructors. Boats will need to be signed out - the sign-out process is TBD. Members do not need to make a multi-year commitment. You can decide to participate in this program, or not, annually.
How will we support this ongoing?
To participate in the program, we will offer a “fee for use” concept in the $400 to $500 range for the season. The fee will ensure we cover the instructor’s fees, ongoing maintenance coverage, and winter storage.
Will an experienced sailing member take responsibility for this program?
Yes, Mark Horowitz has committed to oversee the Program for 2 years with Don Hahl as an advisor. Mark will work with Devin Beattie (BBYC Sailing Director) during the summer to organize how the boats will be signed-out and to coordinate sailing instructors for sign-ups to take the boats out as well as schedule instructors.
How can a new or beginner sailor take advantage of the sailboat?
The plan will be to offer 3 sailing lessons to new or beginner sailors on the sailboat by one of our sailing instructors. Our instructors will be able to “certify” new sailors to be able to skipper the boat with friends or family.
Will this boat be used to enhance our junior sailing program?
Yes, Devin Beattie has exposed 7 and 8 year old junior sailors with her own personal sailboat in an effort to create enthusiasm and the desire to continue to progress in sailing. With this new sailboat in our fleet she will be able to more regularly expose our junior sailors to opportunities outside the Opti.
What boat are we thinking on purchasing?
We have considered several boats and have looked extensively at 2 boats: the Melges 15 and the RS Quest. We have selected the RS Quest primarily because it is more suited for learning to sail and for family usage.
